Meggy's New Hair!
Today I'm talking about what is possibly the most controversial subject I've ever written about on this blog.
Meggy's hair.
Meggy mouse has beautiful hair, and has ever since she was a teeny baby. I was putting her curls in pigtails when she was 6 months old, and by the time she was 18 months, those curls were cascading down her head. Meggy had her first haircut when she was 3, done by my friend's cousin, in their kitchen. She has been scared to go and get her hair cut, but it's been growing more and more scraggly (and much harder to wash!), so I cut her hair a few inches at the end of the summer. I did not do a good job. I've been trying to convince her ever since, to go get her hair cut by someone who knows what they're doing!!
At some point this month, Meggy mentioned that she wanted to get her hair cut. I didn't want to get too excited, so I casually said "We'll see" while internally doing a happy dance. I asked again last week, and she was actually looking forward to having her hair cut! Thomas suggested we go Tuesday, and so we did!
I had been asking Meggy how short she wanted her hair, and every time I asked, she put her hand at her shoulder, Every time I'd hold up my hand below her shoulders, she'd tell me "No, right here!" and point to her shoulder. I think I must have asked her at least 10 times Tuesday morning, because I just knew I'd have a rebellion in my hands if she really did cut that much off.
I thought going at 9:45 on a Tuesday morning would mean we'd walk right in, but not so much. We had to wait about 30 minutes, and I was sooo proud of my girlies while we waited. Meggy didn't get anxious, she just quietly colored a jungle scene in her notebook. Wren started to get restless, but was eager to be distracted, so we did some walking, some pounding on windows (thankfully the hair driers were going) and eating snacks.
Finally it was Meggy's turn, and she was such a pro. She didn't flinch when her hair was washed, and she did a pretty good job of turning her head in the right direction when she was asked. I made sure one last time that she really did want her hair all the way to her shoulders, and the first cut was made!
I was a little nervous when the stylist started cutting her hair, because she cut it REALLY short right next to Meggy's neck. However, she told me that she had noticed Meggy's curls, and that she was going to do an undercut in layers, so that her hair could curl under. I'm not sure that it totally worked, but I know Meggy appreciated how much lighter it made her hair.
Wren did such a good job while Meggy was getting her hair done. We had to walk around, and also kept taking lots of snack breaks. Meggy was also really good with letting us do that, but when she got nervous her little hand would peek out from under her cape and I'd her a small voice say "I love you Mommy, can you stand next to me please?"
Finally Meggy mouse hopped off her chair, and she looked 3 years older. I absolutely love it, and I think it looks perfect on her.
When I posted the pictures, I had quite a few people tell me how sad they were to see Meggy's long hair cut short. Then we went to the Christmas party at our church tonight and I was amazed at how many people came up to say they were sad about Meggy's haircut. In the car on the way home, Meggy told me "So many people at church know my name! They all wanted to talk to me tonight!"
I told her everyone will get used to it pretty quickly. It's SO much easier to wash, brush and put into ponytails. In case you can't tell, I'm a huge fan. The important thing though, is that Meggy likes it. And in her words: "I look cute cute cute cute CA-UTE!"
