Weekend in Williamsburg
Last weekend, the Vance clan (those close to VA anyway) got together for a fun weekend in Williamsburg. As always happens with the Vance fam, we had a jam-packed weekend full of lots of fun!
Thomas, Meggy and I drove down after Thomas got off of work Thursday afternoon. Chip and Gail were renting a timeshare condo in a very very nice timeshare development. There was a pool, and two game rooms full of free games, two movies a day (three on the weekends), mini golf and the condos themselves were very nice, clean and spacious! Well, as spacious as you can get for a two bedroom condo.
Meggy's first attempt at mini gold was more like field hockey. She lasted about three holes before she gave up, and started bowling the balls toward the hole.
Thomas tried to show her the correct way to line up for a swing, but I think all that hair got in the way!
They ended the evening blasting pirates, which I think Meggy liked best. Thomas said by the end of the game, she was actually able to aim in the right direction and shoot on command!
Friday morning we all got up and went to Busch Gardens! Chip, Gail and Victoria had been in Williamsburg since Tuesday, and got a week's pass to Busch Gardens, and the water park across the street. Thomas, Meggy and I went a little earlier than everyone else to be able to take Meggy on the kiddie rides before the crowds ascended.
Meggy is hilarious, in that she is such a perfect mix of Thomas and myself. I love amusement parks (believe it or not, even the ones that don't have Disney in the title!) for the BIG rides and fast thrills. Thomas is a little more apprehensive, but still enjoys certain fast rides, so long as they pass his careful criteria. The above ride did not pass Meggy's criteria, because Oscar the Grouch was overlooking the entire thing. When Meggy and Thomas got off, Meggy told me "Mommy, dat guy is really scary, and I don't like him. But his worms are so friendly!"
This ride, Meggy had no qualms with. She likes Elmo (despite my attempt to keep him out of our lives - I can't stand the little red monster) and she liked the idea of a bouncy ride. I love the bigger version of this ride, but even this had Thomas balking. Thankfully pregnant mama's can ride this, since I couldn't go on the bigger one.
Meggy did NOT want to go on this ride. It was the tamest ride in the entire kid's area, but the water right here freaked her out a little. It took some major convincing from Daddy to get her on the ride, but she would NOT look up for my picture.
In other news, she loved the one ride I didn't get a picture on. They have a little roller coaster in the kid's area that Meggy was just barely tall enough for. Thomas and Meggy went on, and I headed to the bathroom, thinking I'd catch a picture once they got through the line. Well, I guess the roller coaster isn't too popular with the little kids, because they met me coming out of the bathrooms, already having gone on the ride!
This was Meggy's first ride she did by herself. Unlike the park to which I compare all other parks (I'll not say it's name, but it ends in isney) Busch Gardens actually has quite a few rides for little people, onto which parents can't go. She was so nervous at the beginning, but as you can see, she was loving it by the end. When I asked Meggy later, she said the horsie ride was one of her favourites of the day.
Our little family! We were there with the whole family (including Thomas' older brother Trevor and his wife Tiffany) but this was the only picture we got of the family that whole day. This was right before we split up - Thomas went off with Victoria to go on some big rides, everyone else went off to catch some shows, and Meggy and I went off to find some swings.
These swings absolutely delighted Meggy. She had a big grin every time she went around and saw me. I can't wait for next time, when she's big enough to go on the big swings!
Still just the two of us, having fun on the carousel. Meggy picked out the purple horsie, and was so excited to be able to ride it!
The water ride again with Grandma! Meggy looked up and waved this time!
We managed to hit the park during their weekend food and wine festival. These cheddar and bacon hush puppies had been calling my name all day, but the booth's electricity had been out all day. Trevor and Tiffany alerted us that it was back up, right before we left for the day!
Poor Meggy didn't even make it to the car before she was OUT.
The next day, Thomas Meggy and I went to the Yankee Candle flagship store! It's not as spectacular as the one up in Massachusetts, but it was a lovely little reminder of my New England childhood.
Walking back from a showing of Toy Story at the little movie theater.
In the Christmas room at Yankee Candle, where it snows every 4 minutes!
All three of us loved the Christmas villages, and made us think maybe we need to start a new Christmas tradition for our little family.
Saturday evening, we drove out to Virginia Beach, to the Military air museum. There we set up a picnic, and were able to listen to the wonderful music, and accompanying air show! I had never seen an air show set to music before, and thought it was very cool. Meggy was very impressed, until she realized she wasn't going to actually get into a plane. Then she just played with the toys her Grandma (very wisely) had brought.
I don't know anything about planes, other than that they look awesome. However, it was really fun to wander around these old planes, and listen in to the pilots talking to those more intelligent than I.

It's super hard to see, but Meggy and Thomas are in the top row, Thomas is wearing a red shirt and a blue hat, looking down at Meggy. |

We had such a fun weekend with the family, and I'm so glad we were able to take some time to spend with everyone. We can't wait to go back to Williamsburg - there's always so much to do there!
